About Me:  I am the first in my family to go to college to perceive a degree. My major is Biology/Pre-Medicine. My goal is to become a Cardiovascular Surgeon and to go back and practice in Tonga so I can serve the health and well-being of my people. I love to play sports such as basketball and volleyball. I love listening to island reggae, r&b, and oldies. I am deeply embedded in my culture and I am still eager to learn more. Although we may come from small islands in the Pacific, I strongly believe that we can still make a huge difference!

About Me: I was born and raised in the beautiful island of Tutuila, American Samoa. I am currently an Accounting major at the University of Portland. Growing up I had the opportunity to experience two different cultures. Even though I am full Filipino, the Samoan culture has also been a big part of my life. I was very fortunate enough to grow up in both. I love sharing about my cultures and I also love learning about others too. Joining PISA has been a blessing and it was here where I was able to find my home away from home.

Historian

Name:  Lilian Ongelungel

School:  University of Portland

Year in College:

Pacific Island:  Republic of Palau

About Me:  Alii! My name is Lilian Ongelungel and the current Historian for PISA.  I was born and raised in Oregon, but I’m Palauan by blood and Pacific Islander by spirit.  I graduated from high school thinking I’d get as far away from home as possible, but found myself down the street at the University of Portland where I major in organizational communication.  Fortunately for me, it paved my way to various PISA events and provided me with the opportunity to connect with other Pacific Islander students and friends of the islands.  I have always been fascinated by all cultures, especially Pacific Islander cultures and how we all have similar customs, values, and traditions.  Through PISA, I am able to bring together two of my greatest passions to help the community: culture and education.  As a PISA Officer, I hope to help establish and strengthen relationships with like-minded people from all over the place in order to continue empowering Pacific people toward a brighter future.

Contact Lilian:  Feel free to email me with any questions, comments, concerns, or confessions at ongelung11@up.edu

Advisor

Name: Kanani Martinez

Pacific Island: I am part Hawaiian and Mexican.  I grew up in Southern California (Riverside to be exact!), but I have a ton of family in Hawaii and visit a few times each year, mostly for my job!  But get to see my family as a perk!

My Position: I am the adviser of PISA.  This is my first year being really involved.  I’ve always been attached in some way, helping out Mak, who is the former adviser and founder of PISA.  So I’m looking forward to being more involved this year!

About Me: I was actually born in billings, Montana and moved to Riverside when I was about 5 years old.  After graduating high school in 1999 I started at Cal State Sanbernardino in the fall.  I transfered to PSU in 2002 and graduated in 2004 with my B.S. in Liberal Studies and a minor in English.  I continued at PSU in the School of Education and received my M.S. in 2008 in Post Secondary Adult Continuing Education.  During my undergrad, I was one of the founding four officers of  the Pacific Islanders Club at Portland State and it’s now in its 8th year!  I also was an Orientation Leader and worked on campus in the Annual Giving Department for the PSU Foundation.  I have now been working at PSU in the Office of Admissions, Orientation and Campus Visits for about 4.5 as an Admissions Counselor.  I’ve recruited students in California, Idaho, Alaska and most currently Hawaii.

I am expecting my first child over the summer, a baby girl!  So I’m sure my life will be changing in ways I don’t even know!  I live with my sister and boyfriend in Happy Valley. My sister is involved in PISA as well, her name is Maka Martinez.  My mom lives in Ellensburg, Wa. and that’s where you can find me every other Thanksgiving!  I LOVE having people over to my house for bbq’s, dinners, lunchs or just to hang out!  I grew up dancing hula and eventually learning dances from all of the Polynesian Islands, and occasionally you will see me dancing at some function.  I love to listen to all kinds of music and I am a talker!! But I can also listen really well too!!
